Bathrooms and kitchens were the places in a house where tiles were first used.  The standard tiles used then were white square ceramic tiles that had four-inch square sizes.  Tile setters would make sure the bathroom walls were leveled well and would have 90 degree angles for each corner.  Back then, slopping the floor tiles to the drain was not done by many tile setters.  They relied on the tile spaces to make the flow down water to drain opening.
